Trained as a vet before joining the Marines in WW2. Sang and played guitar and was known locally after WW2 as the Cherokee Cowboy. In 1949 he joined the Big D Jamboree and recorded for Bullet, local hit with Jealous Lies. Recorded for Columbia in 52 and had a top 10 with Talk To Your Heart. and Don`t Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes. Joined the Opry, befriended Hank Williams, often filling in for shows Hank missed. His band later included luminaries like Buddy Emmons, Willie Nelson, Johnny Paycheck and Roger Miller. The top musicians and Price`s smooth vocals ensured this was one of the greatest honky tonk country bands ever (his reputation became somewhat diluted with the string ridden MOR of the mid 60s)Nevertheless between 54 and 74 he had 64 US country hits only 11 missing the top 20 and 13 crossover pop hits. His 7 number ones include stone classics like Crazy Arms, My Shoes Keep Walking Back To You, Release Me and City Lights ( as well as Kris Kristoffeson`s debut hit, For The Good Times). He can rest on his laurels having now had 108 hits and is 6th in the all time country chart list. Still recording to this day after battling personal problems. recommended listening Any Gt Hits cd with the early tracks like The Essential on Columbia Honky Tonk Years 1951 -1966 10cd Bear Family (who else??) recent Jasmine cd of fine 50s Radio show transcriptions
