Paul Revere (his real name) was not born in Boise, Idaho, as most reference works claim, but he did grow up there. He formed Paul Revere and the Raiders in 1959, originally a five-piece outfit. The two key members were Paul himself (piano) and Mark Lindsay (sax, vocals). After being turned down by several record companies, their demo of "Beatnik Sticks" was picked up by Gardena Records in Gardena, California, and it was for this company that they recorded eight singles and an LP, 1960-62. Most of these tunes were instrumentals, produced by Kim Fowley and arranged by Gary Paxton. Success came in 1961, when "Like Long Hair", a pounding piano instrumental, peaked at # 38 in the Billboard charts. The group moved to the Columbia label in 1963, where they were initially produced by Mitch Miller (!). From 1965 onwards, they had a long string of hits, including a number one, the John D. Loudermilk composition "Indian Reservation" (1971). After the hits dried up, the duo of Revere and Lindsay continued on the oldies circuit with pickup Raiders. For R&R fans, by far their most interesting period is the one with Gardena. Their sole Gardena LP, "Rock & Roll With Paul Revere And the Raiders", was reissued on vinyl in 1987 and later on CD (under the title "Like Long Hair") on Flash 40, probably a bootleg. 16 tracks.
