The guy certainly had talent, both as a singer and a songwriter, and lasted longer than most. After unsuccesful records for RCA, Decca and Atco, Evans hit paydirt in 1959 with "Seven Little Girls (Sitting In The Backseat)", which went to # 9 in the US and # 25 in the UK, where a cover version by The Avons was the bigger hit. His next two releases, "Midnite Special" (# 16) and "Happy-Go-Lucky Me" (# 10) also did quite well in the Billboard listings, but after "Brigade of Broken Hearts" (# 81), Paul would never return to the US charts again. In the UK he made a surprise comeback in 1978 with "Hello This Is Joanie" (# 6). In 1960 he released an LP full of R&R covers (considered oldies even then !), with some of New York's finest session men, including King Curtis. As a songwriter, his biggest hits were "When" by the Kalin Twins (1958) and "Roses Are Red" by Bobby Vinton (1962). He co-wrote four songs recorded by Elvis Presley: "I Gotta Know", "Something Blue", "Blue River" and "The Next Step Is Love". CD: Paul Evans, The Fabulous Teens ... and Beyond (Ace 551). Recordings from 1959-61 and three more recent items, including the clever "Willie's Sung With Everyone But Me" (about Willie Nelson, from 1993). Website: http://www.paulevans.com
