He wrote songs from an early age and following a spell in the Marines, moved to California in 1956 to become a song-writer. Within a year Gale Storm and Bonnie Guitar had hit with his composition, the moody Dark Moon. That same year he started recording for the Fabor label but his singles failed to sell, including the first issue of From A Jack To A King. He was unsuccessful during his brief spell at Capitol but when Fabor re-released Jack To King it became one of the year's best-sellers (# 2 country, # 6 pop). Over the next couple of years he hit with songs like Another Fool Like Me and Do What You Do Do Well (# 7 country, # 52 pop). He soon faded from the limelight but his songs have constantly been covered, two of the best being Chris Isaak's cover of Dark Moon and Ricky Van Shelton's number one country take on From A Jack To A King. Recommended listening: From A Jack To A King - Bear Family. (31 Fabor and Capitol tracks).
