Jerry Lee Lewis has cited Mullican as an influence, something the Killer doesn't do with carefree abandon. He made his initial mark as the vocalist with Western Swing outfit, Cliff Bruner's Texas Wanderers. He developed into a fine pianist and showman and decided to venture into a solo career on King Records, for whom he cut I'll Sail My Ship Alone, Cherokee Boogie and Pipeliners Blues. He moved to Coral in 1958 and started to rock with the likes of Sweet Rockin' Music and the great Jenny Lee. In the 60's he cut for Starday and Kapp. He was a big drinker and when his wife finally persuaded him away from the bottle, he started eating - and eating. He got too big and had a massive heart attack on New Year's Eve in 1967, dying the following day.
