In his late teens he began playing the blues circuit with Texas Alexander before being drafted. On his return to civilisation, he headed to Oakland, California where he cut records for a myriad of labels like Big Town, Gilt Edge and Trilon. His first hit came in 1948 when Three O'Clock Blues scored for the Down Town label. Later that year he joined Swing Time and for the next couple of years charted with Everyday I Have The Blues, Blue Shadows and Lonesome Christmas. After a brief spell at Aladdin he joined Chess/Checker where he cut the classic Reconsider Baby, one of the great performances in blues history (Elvis cut it for his Elvis Is Back album in 1960). On the Kent label in the mid-60's, he charted with Black Nights and a song he co-wrote with Jimmy McCracklin, Tramp, which picked up a healthy cover from Otis Redding and Carla Thomas. He made a strong comeback in the 90's with a couple of albums for Bullseye Blues records.
