From: "Dik de Heer" Date: Sat Mar 2, 2002 2:28 am Subject: Born To Be With You : Joyce Green JOYCE GREEN Born 2 March 1940, Arkansas, Bradford Joyce Green made only one record, "Black Cadillac"/"Tomorrow", on Vaden 112 (1959). But that is sufficient reason for her inclusion in this feature, as many consider "Black Cadillac" to be one of the best rockers ever to be recorded by a female artist. Around 1955 Joyce became an Elvis fan and started singing rock 'n' roll songs. She made her radio debut at Searcy, Arkansas, in 1957 and began singing in local night clubs. Soon she toured all over northeast Arkansas with Leon Gambill's band. In 1959 she was dating a guy who knew label owner Arlen Vaden and Joyce got the chance to record a single. "Black Cadillac" was her own composition, while the slow pop "Tomorrow" was written by her brother Phil. Teddy Redell played piano on the session and Joyce herself played rhythm guitar. The record was played on local radio stations and jukeboxes, but didn't get any publicity. Joyce continued to sing country locally till the mid-70s. She cut some demo recordings, which are still unreleased. Today she still lives happily married in Bradford. Terry Gordon's website tells us that "Black Cadillac" has been reissued on fourteen (!) different compilations. See: http://rcs.law.emory.edu/rcs/artists/g/gree5000.htm The only comp that also includes the B-side, "Tomorrow" is the CD "Vaden Rock 'n' Roll Story" on Heron. Its liner notes, written by no less than four people (including our own Tony Wilkinson), feature an interview with Joyce Green and Larry Donn's memories of the session.
