His early career on Capitol saw a strong mixture of country singles and some rocked up tunes like When I Found You and Mister Whiz. He wrote Crazy Legs for Gene Vincent and played lead guitar for Ric Cartey's Jiv-A-Tones. Following two years in the Army, he made a significant career move when he relocated to Nashville. Small successes came as both an artist and a songwriter and in 1967 he hit big with Guitar Man. Elvis Presley covered it and Reed's U.S. Male. Reed then hit the top 20 with Tupelo Mississippi Flash, a tribute to Presley. As well as hits like Amos Moses, When You're Hot, You're Hot and Lord, Mr Ford, the 70's saw Reed star in Hollywood films such as WW Dixie and the Dixie Dancekings, High Ballin' and the three Smokey and the Bandit films with his big friend Burt Reynolds. A lull in his career was rectified in the early 80's when he scored with She's Got The Goldmine (I Got The Shaft) and The Bird. News of his death was reported last year, but thankfully they proved unfounded. Recommended listening; Here I Am - Bear Family (Capitol recordings) The Essential Jerry Reed - RCA
