An eight piece band, the group reached its peak in 1959 when their "Mathilda" reached # 47 on the Billboard charts. Although they subsequently toured as opening act for Jerry Lee Lewis and Fats Domino, Cookie and his group mostly played in the Texas/Louisiana region with many performances in New Orleans hotel clubs. Around 1952, Cookie had joined a fledgling swamp pop group called The Boogie Ramblers, which shortly became The Cupcakes. Cookie's powerful singing appeared prominently in classic swamp pop recordings like "Got You On My Mind", "I'm Twisted" and "Belinda". Cookie And The Cupcakes began performing "Mathilda" in 1957. Although they approached numerous record labels, they failed to spark interest until radio station KAOK agreed to let the band use their studios to record the song. Initially released by George Khoury, who sold thousands of copies on his Khoury label, the song was leased for national distribution to Judd Phillips, the brother of Sun Records owner Sam Phillips. "Mathilda" made an enormous impact on South Louisiana's vibrant music scene and quickly became the model for numerous other swamp pop ballads. Cookie And The Cupcakes were the supporting band for vocalist Phil Phillips' hit, "Sea Of Love". In 1965, after racial trouble, Cookie relocated to Los Angeles and seemed to have disappeared, but in 1993 he made a come- back with the reorganized Cupcakes, making several notable appearances, even in Holland (Utrecht). CD: Cookie and the Cupcakes, Kings Of Swamp Pop (Ace CDCHD 142). 30 tracks.
