From: "Dik de Heer" Subject: Born To Be With You : Huelyn Duvall HUELYN DUVALL (By Jean-Marc Pezet) Born 18 August 1939, Garner, Texas Huelyn was raised in Stephensville, Texas and took an early interest in music, his parents having bought him a J-50 Gibson acoustic guitar. He first listened to the country sounds of Hank Snow, Marty Robbins and above all Johnny Horton until the Hillbilly Cat came along. Whilst still in High School, he formed a group, The Tight Strings, and started playing the Fort Worth area and then around Texas and Louisiana. Through his friendship with piano player Danny Wolfe (and with other friends Tooter Boatman and Johnny Duncan), Huelyn started recording demos of Danny Wolfe's compositions such as "Double Talkin Baby" pitched to Gene Vincent and "Modern Romance" recorded by Sanford Clark. Danny was also influential in landing him a deal with Gene Autry's label, Challenge. The first session took place in Nashville in September 1957, with the first single released being "Teen Queen"/"Comin Or Goin'". All in all, Huelyn cut 5 singles for Challenge between 1957 and 1958, with "Little Boy Blue" peaking at # 88 in 1959. (The other side, "Three Months To Kill", was a much better record and is now far better known among R&R fans.) On the later ones, he was backed by a group which would evolve as The Champs. In fact, Huelyn is featured on the backing vocals to the Champs' "Train To Nowhere", as well as being one of those who chant out "Tequila" at the end of that side. In 1960, Huelyn got married and headed back to Texas. He gradually got out of the music business after 2 singles on Starfire and Twinkle in the 1960s. He had a successful professional career as Vice President of a computer company. He made his first trip to Europe (Holland) in 1985 and was recently one of the headliners of the Hemsby festival in the UK. Also, he released a CD of newly recorded sides, featuring former Chaparrals pianist Charlie O' Bannon (a friend from the ol' days).
