Influenced by his idol Hank Penny, he joined various country bands in his teens and by the late 40's was a professional recording and television artist. He played his country with an up-tempo beat and was one of the first artists to play in the rockabilly style in the mid-50's. He wrote three classics in the idiom, Birmingham Bounce, Jukebox Help Me Find My Baby and Gonna Dance All Night. Hardrock himself recorded for Sun among others, including MGM, but he was never able to crack the charts. After years away from the music scene he played in Europe in the late 90's, where his great sense of humour won him many new fans.
