Campbell was a guitar-playing prodigy by the age of ten. He moved to L.A. in 1959, where he joined the instrumental group The Champs, with whom he toured and recorded for about a year. In the sixties Glen became a prolific West Coast session man, playing on recordings of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, and many, many others. He also pursued his own singing career, signing with Crest Records in late 1960. It was on Crest that he had his first chart entry, "Turn Around, Look At Me" (# 62 in 1961), which he co-wrote with his manager, Jerry Capehart. In 1962 Glen joined Capitol, where he stayed until 1981. His breakthrough as a country singer came in 1967, with the Jim Webb composition "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" (# 2 country), soon followed by three # 1 country hits, "I Wanna Live", "Wichita Lineman" and "Galveston". These songs also crossed over to the pop charts. Success continued in the seventies, with two chart toppers (both pop and country) in the shape of "Rhinestone Cowboy" (1975) and "Southern Nights" (1977), the latter written by Allen Toussaint. Altogether, he scored 54 hits on Billboard's country charts (1962-1991) and 38 on the pop charts (1961-1981). From 1968 to 1972 he had his own TV show, The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour and appeared in three films. During the 80s he recorded for Warner Bros, Mirage, Atlantic and MCA, before returning to Capitol in 1991. Campbell is still very active in the music business.
