He started out as a disc jockey in his home town before switching to a music career. At the age of 17 he moved to NYC and began recording demos for Elvis Presley at the latter's Gladys Music firm. He recorded an unreleased single under the name Jerry Grant in 1957. The following year he co-wrote a song called "No Chemise, Please" and recorded it under his name for Sunbeam Records; it reached # 23 in the summer of 1958. The next year Granahan also reached the US charts as a member of the Fireflies, who just missed the Top 20 with the ballad "You Were Mine", on Ribbon Records, and led Dicky Doo And The Don'ts. This quintet recorded for Swan Records and charted five times, first and most notably with "Click Clack" (# 28, 1958), a novelty rock 'n' roll song that Granahan co-wrote with Dave Alldred, the ex-drummer of Jimmy Bowen and the Rhythm Orchids. In later years Granahan became a producer for such artists as Shirley Ellis, Linda Scott, the Dave Clark Five, Jay And The Americans, Patty Duke and Ferrante And Teicher, and ran his own Caprice label, whose roster at one time included Linda Scott, The Angels, James Ray and Santo And Johnny (the latter actually signed to the related Canadian-American label). In the early '90s he was running his own GPG Studios in Warwick, Rhode Island.
