A protege of blues harpists Little Willie Foster and the legendary Sonny Boy Williamson, Frank Frost was a well journeyed bluesman who never strayed far from his down-home style, which sounded for all the world like a product of Excello Records. He had the same lazy, harmonica dominated sound. He hooked up with drummer Sam Carr in 1954 and they formed a band, before Frost joined Sonny Boy's band as a guitarist for a three year stint. In '59 he went back with Carr, to be joined three years later by guitarist Jack Johnson. They recorded an album, Hey Boss Man!, for Sam Phillips, who issued it on his Phillips International label as by Frank Frost and the Nighthawks. It was a great album but unfortunately it failed to rekindle Phillips' love for the blues. Frost's next release was on Jewel Records in 1966 and was produced by Scotty Moore. The results were again uncompromising blues with the single My Back Scratcher (Frost's takeoff on Slim Harpo's Baby Scratch My Back) even denting the R&B charts for three weeks. Nothing happened for a decade until Frost, still with Carr and Johnson in Clarksdale, cut an album for his own Earwig label, followed two years later by Rockin' The Juke Joint Down. Albums continued in '88, '92 and '96 before Frost died of a heart attack at his home in Helena.
