Faron Young, also known as the Singing Sheriff, was one of the most successful honky tonk singers of the 50's and 60's. With a voice that easily crossed from country to pop and a lovable personality, he was a natural in front of live audiences, which helped preserve his career for five decades. He joined the Louisiana Hayride straight from school where he befriended Webb Pierce. In 1951 he had a few singles on Gotham, which in turn got him signed to the nation's premier country label Capitol Records, as well as a regular spot on the Grand Ole Opry. Almost immediately he got drafted and posted to Korea. Goin' Steady and I Can't Wait (For The Sun To Go Down) both went into the country top 5 before he was discharged. Once he returned home, he was all over the charts with another 16 top 10 hits, three of them reaching number 1, including his theme song, Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young. He also starred in ten films including Hidden Guns, Road To Nashville and Stampede. Between 60 and 62 he scored another 6 top 10 hits including the massive number 1, Hello Walls (written by Willie Nelson), which even got to # 12 in the pop charts. He moved to Mercury in 1963 and over the course of the next 11 years enjoyed 17 more top 10 hits. His biggie from this period was 1971's It's Four In The Morning, another # 1. His chart activities fell away during the 80's and in the 90's he developed a debilitating strain of emphysema, leading to him taking his own life in December 1996.
