Born to a military family in Birmingham, Alabama she spent her childhood in North Carolina and Virginia. She fell in love with the folk music of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez and moved to New York to pursue a career on the folk scene. In 1970 she cut a low key album Gliding Ball before moving to Washington DC via Nashville. Whilst playing in a trio in DC she was spotted by ex-Byrd and Flying Burrito Brother Chris Hillman who recommended her to Gram Parsons who was making his mark with country-rock. She sang harmony on his early '70s albums, GP and Grievous Angel. When he took one drug too many and became a grievous angel, she went solo and released Pieces Of The Sky in 1975. Next she formed the Hot Band (James Burton, Glen D. Hardin, Rodney Crowell) and over the years cut some critically acclaimed albums (Elite Hotel, Luxury Liner, Blue Kentucky Girl, Evangeline, White Shoes). In 1987 she recorded Trio with Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt and three years later cut an album Duets where she teamed up with the likes of George Jones and Willie Nelson. She cut a fine live album at the Opry with the Nash Ramblers in '92 followed by Cowgirl's Prayer the following year. CD recommendation: Anthology (2 CD-set, 45 songs from 1975-1990), released in 2001.
