R&B sax-man Earl Bostic was a prolific recording artist who recorded nearly 400 songs for the King label of Cincinatti who Bostic stuck with from 1949 until 1963. Earl was a schooled musician, formally trained at Xavier University in New Orleans. His career started in the mid-West during the early '30s, but by the end of the decade he had relocated to New York, where he worked for Hot Lips Page, Lionel Hampton and Cab Calloway. As an arranger, he worked for many bands, including those of Paul Whiteman, Artie Shaw, Gene Krupa and Louis Prima. He formed his own band in 1944, recorded for Allegro, then Gotham, and had his first hit in 1948 with "Temptation" (# 10 R&B). Hig biggest smash was "Flamingo", which topped the R&B charts for four weeks in 1951. Other hits were "Sleep", "Cherokee" and You Go To My Head". Bostic sidemen have included Bill Doggett, MIckey Baker and Earl Palmer. In 1956 he had his first heart attack, which sidelined him for three years.
