From: "Dik de Heer" Date: Tue Jan 15, 2002 1:16 am Subject: Born To Be With You : Earl Hooker EARL HOOKER Born Earl Zebedee Hooker, 15 January 1930, Clarksdale, Mississippi Died 21 April 1970, Chicago, Illinois Blues singer / songwriter / guitarist / multi-instrumentalist A cousin of John Lee Hooker, Earl is the king of the electric slide-guitar. He moved to Chicago as a child, attended Lyon and Healy music school, worked the streets with Bo Diddley, played small gigs. Toured with Ike Turner (1949-50) and Sonny Boy Williamson. First recordings as a solo artist for King, 1952. Also recorded for Sun (1953), unissued at the time. His records have appeared on many labels including Argo, Checker, Blue Thumb, Cuca and Arhoolie. Appeared on UK TV with the Beatles, 1965. Prolific session guitarist for (among many others) Junior Wells, A.C. Reed and Muddy Waters, backing the latter on "You Shook Me Baby". Enjoying a revival in the late sixties, Hooker collaborated with Steve Miller on the album "Hooker And Steve". He died of tuberculosis at the age of only 40. Collections include "First And Last Recordings" (Arhoolie), "Two Bugs And A Roach" (Arhoolie), "Sweet Black Angel" (One Way) and "Play Your Guitar, Mr. Hooker!" (Black Top).
