Julian, 7 April 1937, Houston, Texas Died 6 November 1998, Los Angeles, California Singer / group leader. Julian first gained popularity during his high school days as the leader of one of rock 'n' roll's first racially integrated doo-wop quartets, Don Julian and the Meadowlarks. After a brief stint at RPM Records that produced two singles in 1954, the group signed with Dootie Williams' Dootone label in early 1955 and enjoyed local success, most notably the singles "Heaven And Paradise" and "Always And Always". After leaving Dootone in 1957, he recorded for Art Laboe's Original Sound and Rudy Harvey's Dynamite and Amazon labels. Julian's moment in the spotlight finally arrived in 1964, when his group, now simply called The Larks, enjoyed a # 7 pop hit with "The Jerk" on Money Records. During his time on Money he recorded three albums that kept him actively on the road. In later years he recorded primarily for his own Jerk label. Though not a musical innovator, Julian was always a businesslike musician and organiser who kept his band working right up until his death. All of Don Julian & the Meadowlarks' RPM and Dootone recordings are available on the CD "Heaven And Paradise" (Ace 552). "Boogie Woogie Teenage", probably their most rocking track, is also on "The Dootone Story" (Ace 242) and "Jiving Jamboree, Vol. 2" (Ace 706). Ace/Kent have just released "Don Julian and the Larks : the Money recordings" (Kent CDKEND 207). Website: http://www.soulsounds.com/ajulian.html
