Curtis Gordon has always played the same kind of good old hillbilly honky-tonk music from down south, until his retirement from the music business in the mid 1990s. He spent his childhood listening to music, digging Ernest Tubb and Bob Wills, and formed his first band in 1949, playing around Georgia and Florida. Spotted at a talent contest, he was signed to RCA in 1952. He cut several sides under the guidance of Steve Sholes, but none of them really made some noise except "Rompin' And Stompin'" in 1953, a good country boogie number that led him recording more up-tempo numbers. By 1954, he had moved to Mercury, and in the middle of the rockabilly craze in 1956, he cut the favorites "Draggin'", "Rock Roll Jump And Jive", I'm Sittin' On The Top Of The World" and "Mobile, Alabama". Other records followed, notably for Dollie. Curtis always had steady work touring and running his Radio Ranch clubs in Mobile and Georgia, until being rediscovered by European rockabilly fans in the 1980s. He is now living a quiet and healthy happy retirement, still riding horses and hunting.
