All his country chart hits (nineteen during the 1961-1971 period) were on this label. The most famous of these is "Wolverton Mountain" (co-written with Merle Kilgore) from 1962, which topped the Billboard country charts for nine weeks and also crossed over to the pop charts (# 6). The song is about a real man (Clifton Clowers) and a real place in Arkansas. All Music Guide and Wayne Jancik's "Billboard Book Of One-Hit Wonders" claim that King died in 1983. This is not correct, he is still with us. Clifton Clowers, the mean "Wolverton Mountain" man, died August 14, 1994. He was 102. CD: Wolverton Mountain (Collectables).
