THE CHESSMEN - by Al Kelly This Chessmen group had no relation to any other Chessmen and this was their only release. The group is really unknown and were all from Brooklyn and New Jersey and they were stationed in Fort Lewis, WA and were in the Army at the time. They all started singing together at the barracks and at a weekend show, they were heard by Art Mineo of Tacoma, Wa. Art was well known in the area as a musician and writer, who discovered the Wailers and made them a national name. Art recorded the record and tried selling it to several NYC labels but later tok it to Clark Galehouse, who owned Golden Crest, and had several hits with the Wailers. Clark picked up the record and released it (out of numberical sequence too). The label had a few other releases at the same time and the record never got any promotion.
