THE CHARGERS - By Al Kelly n March '58, singer Jesse Belvin signed his first contract with a major record company, RCA-Victor. In practising for his first session, he practiced with two of his neighbors (Dunbar John White and his brother Johnny "Junior" White) plus they added Benny Easley , James Norman Scott (Jimmy Norman, had a couple hits) and Mitchell Alexander. The group was set to back up Jesse but talked RCA into recording the group. In their first session and under the direction of Shorty Rogers and producer Dick Pierce cut several songs and the group had their first release in July of '58. The group was invited back for a second session in Oct.'58 which Jesse forgot about the session since he usually did the fifth member part. None of the three sides were ever released, again a month later they went back in the studio and recorded four more sides and this is one of the sides. They did back Jesse on his RCA releases but the group was dropped by RCA and Jimmy Norman joined the Dyna-Sores, who did "Alley Oop" as a cover and later had a hit on the Little Star label in '62.
