Campbell spent his early working life on his father's tobacco farm in Stokes County, North Carolina, before joining Dick Hartman's Tennessee Ramblers in Pittsburgh in the early 30's. They recorded throughout the decade under various guises, Tennessee Ramblers, Washboard Wonders and Hartman's Heartbreakers, until Hartman left the group in 1937. Campbell took over the group in 1945, as they recorded for RCA Victor where they scored Campbell's only hit with Steel Guitar Ramble in 1949. He made records for Palmetto and Super Disc before cutting some rockabilly for MGM in the mid-50's, the best being Rock And Roll Fever and The Rocking Guitar. In the 60's he tried his hand at Big Wheel and Starday and he even founded his own label back in North Carolina where he continued to play the odd show long after his recording career had ended.
