THE CAVALIERS (ABC-PARAMOUNT LABEL) - by Al Kelly There must have been 20 Cavaliers but this group always got lost in naming the different ones. They actually released the record Cavaliers but I've seen this record with Scott Stevens & Cavaliers. Scott Stevens was really Steve Glazer and the group formed in '56 in the Bronx. They put the group together, not for the music but to meet girls!!!!!! They were a racially mixed group, which was rare in those days. They were singing at the Sunnyside Ballroom in Harlem when Ed Portnoy of the Ivy label saw them perform, and like the group very much. He asked the group to come to his office at the Brill Bldg for an audition. Portney signed the group after they sang for about an hour and told them he would set up their recording session. This was the song and Portnoy knew right away it was a hit so he leased it to ABC Records teen label APT so it would get full national exposure. Stevens co-wrote the song as well as singing lead. The group was asked to come to Philly to appear on the ABC TV show "Bandstand" (ABC-Para APT all got special help on Bandstand). They got to the show and were expected to go on and after waiting and seeing the show end, the group manager asked why they didn't get on the show and the answer was "ran out of time" but the only reason was the group was integrated and Clark didn't want that on his show. The record never made it big and Stevens says the reason was the group makeup. It became a big East Coast record only. The second release on APT listed Scott & the group and several in the group didn't like that and the group split up with Stevens going on as a single. Scott made three singles for APT and ABC in '59 & '60.
