Bunker Hill is responsible for some of the wildest records ever made, at a time when the heyday of rock 'n' roll was already a thing of the past. At the age of sixteen he became a succesful professional boxer, before joining a spiritual vocal group called The Mighty Clouds of Joy. While recording with this group in Washington, D.C., he was heard by Link Wray's brother Ray Vernon, who had opened his own studio in 1960. This led to the recording of "Hide And Go Seek", a gospel-type holler, which Vernon (who also invented the name Bunker Hill) leased to Mala Records. In 1962, the disc went to # 27 R&B and # 33 pop. The success left David somewhat confused : he didn't know whether he wanted to be a religious singer or a rock 'n' roll shouter. In the end he settled for the latter and made two records in 1963 that made Little Richard look tame : "Red Riding Hood And The Wolf" and "The Girl Can't Dance". "Hide And Go Seek" would remain his only hit, though. "Hide And Go Seek" is available on "The Golden Age Of American Rock 'n' Roll", Vol. 6 (Ace 650), "The Girl Can't Dance" and "Red Riding Hood And The Wolf" are on the Link Wray CD "Missing Links, Vol. 3 : Some Kinda Nut" (Norton 212) and also on the "Wild And Frantic" CD from 2001 (not to be confused with the Official CD with the same title, reviewed in NDT 221).
