Griffin, 23 February, 1923, Corsicana, Texas Buck Griffin was one of the truly great artists that never made the big time, despite having the voice and the songwriting talent required. Like many young Texans he went from the school room into the oil fields, playing in a country band in his spare time. He was signed by Joe Leonard's Lin record label and had seven releases in the next couple of years. They ran the gauntlet from pure country (It Don't Make No Never Mind) to flat-out rockabilly (Let's Elope Baby). The next four singles were leased to the major label MGM and despite some cracking numbers in the shape of Stutterin' Papa, Watchin' The 7:10 Roll By and Jesse Lee, they all failed to register in the charts. There were further releases on Lin, Holiday Inn and his own Rotary label, but nothing clicked. He began selling bibles and hosting an NBC TV show from Kansas before retiring in Erick, Oklahoma.
