There he became friendly with Jackie Wilson, whose manager introduced him to the head of Parrot Records, for which label he recorded "My Love Is Solid as a Rock", his first single (1956). In 1961 Jackie Wilson urged Bobby to go to New York, where he was turned down by many record companies. His perseverance paid off when he found Beltone Records. His first record for that label was "Tossin' And Turnin'", which topped the Billboard charts for no less than seven weeks, making it the number one single of 1961. The follow-up, "One Track Mind" also made the Top 10 that same year (# 9). Two more singles made the lower region of the Hot 100 before Lewis disappeared from the chart forever. "Tossin' And Turnin'" is on the CD "The Golden Age Of American Rock 'n' Roll, Vol. 1" (Ace 289) and probably on several other compilations.
