He had his own hit (# 23 pop, # 2 R&B) for Anna Records in 1960 with "Money (That's What I Want)" and became a close associate of Motown founder Berry Gordy. "Money" (written by Gordy) became a classic after it had been recorded by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. It would remain Strong's only pop hit, though he had some minor R&B hits in the seventies. His biggest successes came as a songwriter for Motown, after he teamed up with producer Norman Whitfield. The duo wrote such hits as "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" and several other big sellers for The Temptations. Strong has been honoured (along with Norman Whitfield) with the National Academy of Songwriters' Lifetime Achievement Award. "Money" is available on the CD "The Golden Age Of American Rock 'n' Roll, Vol. 7" (Ace 700).
