THE RE-VELS - by Al Kelly The Re-Vels and later Revels and typo Revals were a North Philly group and I've done several of their songs and their bio but they really were an interesting group. Recording for the Philly Teen & Sound (owned by Bernie Lowe, Bob Horn, Kal Mann & Artie Singer) they had several hits including "Cha Cha Toni." John Kelly was the lead singer. After their contract was over, a local DJ took a master that the group recorded and got Chess to release it in ''58. Nothing happened with the record and the group was working the club scene around Philly. Two Temple U. students (Harold Norton & Bill Goldstein) saw the group and talked to them on their break. The two students felt they could record the group on their new label, Norgolde. The group cut their first release and it was called "Dead Man's Stroll" and many radio stations didn't like the morbid title so the following month, re-released it as the " Midnight Stroll" which became a hit for the group. Their followup did nothing and after that two minoe releases and that was it for the group. Someone told me that they played local clubs for years but never saw any info to back it. I used to go to all those "black' clubs with Lloyd Fatman, a local DJ or Big John Bowie of the Philadelphians and saw some great musicians and enjoyed them all but never ran into this group.
