THE MELLO-KINGS - by Al Kelly The Mello-Kings will always be remembered for their hit record "Tonight,Tonight" which was their very first release. The group from Mount Vernon, NY got together while in high school in '56. They were originally called the Mellotones and went around all the record labels in the Brill Building in NYC looking for a label to record them. Al Silver of the Herald & Ember label, liked the group and signed them to his Herald label. Their first record "Tonight,Tonight" was released as the Mello-Tones and the first pressing showed that name but Silver was alerted to the Mellotones on the Gee label so they pressed the next batch with the Mello-Kings. Some records showed a tape over the old name (DJ copies)or a new label hand glued over the old. The group led by Bob Scholl recorded nine releases on Herald and had only one hit. In '61 with oldies station hitting the 50's records as oldies started playing this record steady and next thing the record was climbing the charts again.
