THE DREAMLOVERS - by Al Kelly I believe I sent out "Annabelle Lee" in '02 and it remains one of my favorites from the Dreamlovers. The songs starts out like a gospel songs and then opens up to a real mover. The Dreamlovers got together in '56 as the Romances with William Johnson as their lead. One night a jealous guy shot Johnson over a girl he was dating. Johnson never recorded with the group. The group was so upset and out of respect for Johnson, changed the group's name to the Dreamlovers. The group got a job at Cameo/ Parkway as backup singers and backed Chubby Checker doing "the Twist" and backed DeeDee Sharp doing "Mashed Potatoe Time" and backed many other groups. Morris Gardner joined the group in '59 and along with Don Hogan did the lead parts. Don Hogan, the tenor and guitar player for the group did the lead on this song. They got their first break from Buddy Caldwell, who owned the V-Tone and Len labels. Morris left the group in '63 and on several hits by the group in the mid 60'd, the Four Epics did the backup work for the Dreamlovers.
