Summary of the Shakespeare Authorship Debate
Did Shakespeare really write his plays and sonnets?
Shakespeare or de Vere?

A controversial theory suggests that Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, a poet and intimate of Queen Elizabeth I, and not William Shakespeare, was the author of the plays and sonnets of Shakespeare. The Oxfordian side says that the famous writer was not the William Shakespeare born in Stratford, but rather that Shakespeare was merely a penname used by Edward de Vere so he could publish his works, which often caused political scandals.
