CHILDHOOD
As a young boy Seto lived a hard life. At the age of five, his mom died after giving birth to his little brother, Mokuba. Two years later his father died in a car accident. In the English Anime, all that is said about their parents is that they went missing. Seto and his brother were then sent to live with his relatives, who didn't even care about the two brothers. Their relatives ended up spending their inheritance, and putting them in an orphanage. Here Seto promised Mokuba that he would always take care of him. Mokuba was constantly picked on, but Seto, sticking to his promise, protected him. Many people wanted to adopt Seto, because he was highly intelligent, but young Seto refused to be adopted unless they adopted Mokuba as well. He wouldn't allow his brother and himself to be split apart.
One day a man named Gozaburo Kaiba came to the orphanage. Gozaburo was a champion chess player, and was the current CEO owner of KaibaCorp, which at the time made military weapons. The only reason Gozaburo came to the orphanage was to gain more publicity. Seto saw his change of getting adopted. He challenged Gozabaro to a chess match. The stakes were if Seto won Gozaburo would adopt himself as well as Mokuba. Being as intelligent as Seto was, he was able to say the words "check mate" to his new father. Seto and Mokuba inherited the last name Kaiba, while their real last names remain unknown. From the moment Gozaburo adopted Seto he trained him to be a "business man" so one day he would be able run KaibaCorp. Gozaburo trained the young Kaiba heir to the point of exhaustion, abusing him constantly. Through all of the bad influences that happened to Seto, his personality changed to a completely cold-hearted person. Seto was more interested in the game Duel Monsters more than anything. He had very few cards, at the time, and they weren't even all that rare. Mokuba drew Seto a Blue Eyes White Dragon card to help Seto feel better with all his training. Seto swore that one day he would get a real Blue Eyes White Dragon.
On Seto's birthday, he was given 2% of KaibaCorp and could spend the money any way he wished, but the following year he had to pay Gozaburo back one hundred times that amount. Using his developed business skills Kaiba accomplished this task on the first day. In the English anime he was given ten million dollars and had to only make it ten times the amount. Seto formed a plan to gain control of KaibaCorp, while Gozaburo tried to stop it by using Mokuba. Gozaburo's attempts didn't work, because Mokuba is very loyal to his brother. After the take over Gozaburo uploads his mind into a virtual world, but there are many other versions of what happened to Gozaburo after Kaiba took over the company. In the manga, he commits suicide by jumping out a window. In the very first season of the Yugioh, Kaiba electrocutes him. After Gozaburo was out of the way Kaiba changed KaibaCorp to a company that creates the latest technologies for the game Duel Monsters (duel disks, dueling arenas, etc.). Though the things Seto did seemed harsh, everything Seto did, he did it so Mokuba and him would have a better life.
