Wasim targets world record after completing 350 wickets
by Shahid Hashmi
29 Nov 1998
PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Nov 29 (AFP) - Star Pakistani paceman Wasim Akram completed a milestone 350 Test wickets here Sunday on the third day of the first Test against Zimbabwe.
Neil Johnson was his 350th victim in his 82nd Test, Wasim becoming only the eighth bowler to complete that goal.

India's Kapil Dev holds the record with 434 wickets in 131 Tests.

``Its a happy moment for me and I have the hunger to march on to the world record, I would love to do this as much as anything,'' Wasim told AFP.

Wasim, 32, made his debut in 1984-85 and in only his second Test took 10 wickets against New Zealand at Dunedin, the player ever to do so.

Under the guidance of former Pakistani cricket hero Imran Khan, Wasim became a world class fast bowler in Tests, one-day and English county cricket.

Contracted by English county Lancashire in 1987, Wasim led them to second position in the 1998 season.

He formed a lethal pair with Waqar Younis and motivated Pakistan to remarkable wins in England, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Wasim played a key role in Pakistan's world cup triumph in Australia in 1992 claiming Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis in the final to finish as man of the tournament.

He is the only bowler to take 300 or more wickets in both one-day and Test cricket.

Wasim has a tally of wickets 363 in 254 limited overs Internationals, the most for any bowler.
