Pakistan owe victory to Wasim
Nelson Clare - 19 June 2000
Former captain Wasim Akram played key roles with bat and ball to help Pakistan to a five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Wasim claimed five wickets in a Test innings for the 25th time and then scored an unbeaten 20 in 105 minutes after Pakistan, chasing a modest victory target of 131 in the first Test, had slipped to 89 for five.

He and Younis Khan, who made 32, took their side to victory, Younis sealing their triumph with two sixes off Muttiah Muralitharan who had threatened to turn the tables on Pakistan by taking three wickets.
Sri Lanka, 53 for two overnight, had been bundled out for 123 in their second innings shortly after lunch.

Wasim, who on Friday had claimed his 400th Test wicket, ripped through the middle and late order to finish with five for 45. He later played down his role in the victory, saying it had been "a great team effort".

Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya blamed his side's poor batting for the defeat, and his Pakistan counterpart Moin Khan praised his batsmen for playing Muralitharan well on a turning wicket.

The second Test of the three-match series begins in Galle on Wednesday.
