The Taelons
Much of the Taelons' history is shrouded in mystery, as they are an ancient race that has roamed the stars for millions of years. Once they were one race with the warrior Jaridians, evolved from the primitive atavus that spawned them. The Taelons are, unlike humans and Jaridians, energy-based life-forms with no survival instincts and little physical strength. They possess the energy-based organ known as the shakarava (as did the Kimera and the Jaridians) though theirs lie dormant, thanks to the Commonality. The Taelons are more confidently spiritual than humanity, as members of their species who pass away are still present in the Commonality. This, coupled with their lack of survival instincts, gives them only a shadowy fear of death. They are capable of "willing" themselves to die, though the process is slow and painful.
At one time, the Taelon/Jaridian race was saved by the ancient anthropologist species, the Kimera, who apparently interbred to save them from an unspecified fate. They responded by systematically obliterating the Kimera, hunting down and murdering or banishing the Kimera who remained, and remained in fear of the Kimera's knowledge and power.
However, soon the Taelons' life-force and fertility began to wane, as the Jaridians sought to destroy them. A scientist named Ma'el traveled to the distant planet of Earth, and there he began trying to discover if humanity might possibly be able to save the Taelons. At first he gave signs that they would be perfect, but later reversed his response and warned them not to come.
During his time on Earth, Ma'el bestowed gifts both helpful and harmful on humanity. He may have been the basis for certain Irish myths and legends, such as the one of the "Mystic King." When humans became fatally addicted to the drug "Bliss" which was native to the area, Ma'el found a cure after nearly a century. He also bestowed psychic powers on certain individuals, somewhat similar to the psychic abilities of the Taelons.
In an effort to protect humanity from the Taelons, he enlisted a Roman senator named Julianus to remain in a stasis pod on his ship, sunk deep in the water in South America's coastline. Julianus, who had a deep loyalty to Ma'el, was ordered to judge the motives of the Taelons if they should come to Earth, and act accordingly. He also left small "traps" around the ship, such as a vial with the Taelon disease "pesh'tal" inside it, that would inject any Taelon who touched it with the deadly virus.
Ma'el left a relic, a repository of information that would require one human and one Taelon to access. He was sealed into a stone tomb, his body locked in a stasis field so that it did not disintegrate, with a message to the Taelons that they were wrong to come to Earth. It has been widely speculated, though never proven that Ma'el was Da'an's parent and Zo'or's grandparent.
The Taelons constructed a massive living ship, the Mothership, to come to Earth and potentially keep them all in stasis until humanity might save them. They arrived on Earth with the promise of peace and goodwill, offering medical and social benefits that humanity welcomed. Their scientific assistance banished hunger, many military conflicts, and many deadly diseases. In major capitols of the world, Taelons known as "Companions" were stationed in massive living Embassies.
The Taelons were skilled in quieting dissenters and doubters, but they were unaware of a widespread, underground movement that was devoted to seeking out the truth of their presence on Earth and, hopefully, to pushing them off of Earth. This movement was headed by Jonathan Doors, a billionaire-turned-radical who faked his own death to devote all of his attention to the Resistance.
The primary Taelon in North America was Da'an, a high-ranking diplomat with a quiet, sometimes steely nature. He was extremely popular, especially at the beginning of his posting, as were many of his fellows. However, shortly after appointing a second implant, Da'an's fiercest rival -- and only child -- Zo'or arrived to challenge both Da'an and Synod Leader Quo'on.
Several disruptions marred the third year after the Taelons' arrival, including bad PR from a botched operation on a young girl; the Futurity Farms embarrassment; the reapprance of Jonathan Doors; the kidnapping of Da'an by a group of rogue soldiers, and a sinister experiment wherein a Taelon scientist was transformed into a Taelon/human hybrid, and rapidly descended into psychosis. Additionally, Ma'el's burial ground and final message were unearthed in Ireland.
The Taelons were thrown into a tizzy when an old enemy reappeared -- Ha'gel, the last of the Kimera. Ha'gel went in search of a mate, not harming the Taelons at all, and created a son shortly before being killed by William Boone and several other agents. Boone was near-fatally wounded, and was shortly after killed by Zo'or.
The Taelon agenda shifted slightly -- and incompletely -- into focus when Zo'or admitted that the Taelons were battling the Jaridians. Da'an was nearly killed by one of their probes, which had formerly killed Synod leader Quo'on, but was saved by Major Liam Kincaid, Ha'gel's grown son. Zo'or was elected the new Synod leader, over Da'an.
Da'an became involved with the Liberation movement shortly after meeting Liam Kincaid. The grown infant took him to the Liberation hideaway, angering Jonathan Doors. Da'an kept both Liam's ancestry and his ties to the Resistance a secret, but later used them against Liam to solidify his position with Zo'or. This caused a deep rift between Da'an and Liam that took a long time to heal.
The relic of Ma'el's surfaced and was opened, one chapter at a time. Additionally, Synod leader Zo'or was infected by the pesh'tal, and was in danger of spreading it over all of New York City. Additionally, it was found that Jonathan Doors had been excavating Ma'el's ship, and the ancient Roman Julianus woke and nearly destroyed the mothership.
Zo'or's powerbase began to erode when the War Minister T'than arrived on Earth, with the intent of overthrowing his old rival. Zo'or took the opportunity to push aside some of his opponents, T'than included; only the quick actions of Major Kincaid saved T'than's life. T'than held the grudge against Zo'or until he entered stasis, just before Zo'or killed him.
The Taelons remained a strong political force, as they were responsible for the election of the president of the USA and retained blackmail material concerning other political figures. However, they were occasionally reminded that though they had superior weaponry, humans could only be pushed so far. This fact was emphasized when some humans overcame the CVIs.
Exposure to human beings appears to have a certain effect on Taelons, in that they begin to appreciate qualities in human beings that they themselves lack, such as self-sacrifice and passionate emotion.
How they act upon this knowledge is unique to them...
