MARY J. BLIGE

On January 11, 1971, Mary J. Blige was born in the Bronx, NY. As a little girl, she spent a few years in Savannah, GA, before moving with her moms and her older sister to the Schlobam housing projects in Yonkers, NY.

Unfortunately life in Yonkers wasn't easy. Mary ended up dropping out of high school in her junior year, chosing to hang out with her girls and doing their hair in her family's Yonkers apartment.

Mary caught a lucky break when a tape she had made of herself singing an Anita Baker song in a mall in White Plains was passed on to Uptown Records' CEO Andre Harrell. Andre was impressed with Mary's voice and signed her to be a backup singer for local acts like Father MC. In 1991, a guy by the name of Sean "Puffy" Combs and unofficially became her manager.

With Puffy's help and influence, Mary J. Blige burst out on the music scene as a combat-boot wearing homegirl who sported NY jerseys and was representing the projects like every around the way girl we knew. She was asking us "What's The 411?" But she was the one with the real answers.

Mary was quickly named the Queen of Hip Hop by fans who suported her "realness." Her next cd "My Life" was plagued with struggles and growing pains as Mary took us deeper into her career and giving us a glimpse of who she was as a person. Her trials and tribulations of living the life of an entertainer began to take a toll on her.

"I was crying out for help during the My Life album. If you listen to the song 'Be Happy,' I was like, Please, somebody come save me."

"Share My World" was her 3rd release and she was going strong. Mary seemed to have gained some independence. Co-writing 90% of the album, Mary took this project by storm and made it her baby. The album features Elton John, Lauryn Hill, Chucky Thompson, DMX, Aretha Franklin, Babyface, Eric Clapton, K-Ci Hailey and Nas.

By her 4th album, the self-entitled "Mary," Mary J. seemed to have shaken off the bad habits and bad influences of others that had been weighing her down as an artist and as a person. Mary had matured and began to express herself with greater strenght. She was no longer longing to be heard. She was being heard. Mary's voice had gotten stronger along with her self-image and she admit that she had come full circle and was no longer worrying about what other people thought of her -- she was taking care of home.

With Mary's 5th album dropping in 2001, she has been living up to its title of "No More Drama". Mary's unique and creative style was present all over this album. It is spiritual, emotional, personal, and full of wisdom. The platinum-selling album was recently re-released with additional songs featuring Common and a remix of the title track by Sean (now known as "P. Diddy") Combs. This collabo marks the first time that Mary has recorded with Puffy since he produced her first two albums.

This time around Mary truly seems to realize just how far she has come as an artist and as a woman. Mary has finally taken a hold of her career and her life. In the midst of planning a world tour, Mary and her boyfriend got engaged, but have yet to set a wedding date. Wish her luck, she deserves it!
