Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3

"Yoshi's back, baby!"

Super Mario Advance 3 is the third installment of the Super Mario Advance series. It’s a port of one of the best SNES games on the system, Yoshi’s Island. Once again, the Mario Bros. remake is included as a bonus. In Yoshi's Island, Kamek kidnaps Baby Luigi, and the Yoshis decide to help reunite Baby Mario with his kidnapped brother.

Visuals:
The graphics almost look as good as the original SNES version. The backgrounds still look very colorful and vibrant, and the sprites are animated very well.

Sounds:
Like SMA 1 and 2, the sound had to be toned down a bit from the original SNES version, but the music of YI on the GBA sounds nearly as good. However, the Yoshis now speak (they didn’t in the original), and they talks like he did in Yoshi’s Story, which… really isn’t a good thing because they sounded really annoying.

Gameplay:
The gameplay, like the graphics and sounds, is nearly identical to the SNES version. The game is the same for the most part. Some new levels were added, however, increasing the number of levels to over fifty. One complaint about SMA3 is that the controls are rather difficult to get used to if you’ve played YI on the SNES a lot. The GBA feels a lot different than the SNES controller, not to mention there is less
buttons on the GBA.

Replayability:
Yoshi's Island is fun the whole way through. As stated before, YI features over fifty levels, with several hidden levels and mini-games as well.

Bottom Line:
Even though the controls seem a bit awkward when compared to the SNES version, Yoshi's Island is still an excellent platformer. It’s definitely worth buying if you’ve never played Yoshi’s Island or if you liked the SNES version a lot.

Final Score: A
