| Reviews Super Mario Advance "Two Classic Games, One Pak!" Super Mario Advance is a port of the western version of Super Mario Bros. 2. Its not a port of the NES version, but its a port of the SNES version found in Super Mario All-Stars, which featured updated graphics and sound. Also featured is a remake of Mario Bros. which can be played with up to four players. In Super Mario Bros. 2, Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Peach travel to the land of Subcon, where they must defeat the troublesome villain, Wart. Visuals: The graphics pretty much remain unchanged from the SNES version. A few new things have been added though, such as the revamped character select menu, newly added giant items and enemies, etc. Sounds: The music had to be toned down a bit to fit the GBA, but for the most part, the game sounds just like the SNES version. Each character and most enemies now talk or make noises. Gameplay: SMB2 was notorious for jumping the gun; it was much different than SMB and didnt feel like a Mario game. Thats because it wasnt originally a Mario game. I wont get into it much, but in short, it was a game called Doki Doki Panic, repackaged with Mario characters, and released as Super Mario Bros. 2 in the US (and later Japan as SMB USA). Anyway, the gameplay is, for the most part, the same as the SNES version. A few things have changed, though. Ace Coins have been added, a new boss is in the game (Robirdo), and there are giant enemies and vegetables. Replayability: SMB2 wont take too long to defeat, especially if youve played and beaten the NES and/or SNES versions before. A few new elements have been added to the game to add a bit more replay value, such as the Ace Coins and Yoshis Challenge, but theyre dont give you much more incentive to play the game more. If you get bored with SMB2, you can play the updated Mario Bros. game, either alone or with up to 3 friends via the GBA link cable. Bottom Line: Super Mario Advance doesn't really add too many new things to the SNES version of Super Mario Bros. 2, but it's still fun, albeit a bit short. Final Score: B- Also recommended... Super Mario Bros. DX (GBC) Super Mario All-Stars (SNES) Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) Any questions, comments, submissions, or anything related to the site should be e-mailed to me: shadowdragonxx [at] hotmail [dot] com.
