Background: The original Dark Nation looked almost nothing like the current bearer of the name. Instead, Mikhail ShinRa, created through study and the help of scientists a feline crossed with a viper that had the intelligence to follow orders and the ability to use materia that was fastened into the collar of the panther-based beast. She only followed his voice and his orders and was thus the perfect bodyguard for Mikhail. And as he grew older and his mind was consumed by the madness that affected all of the males in the ShinRa line, she was the only thing he put his trust in. After Mikhail died along with Nation, the materia that the creature used was placed within a pouch and passed on to the eldest male heir of the ShinRa line. Though they used the materia, nothing untoward happened until the fifth generation after Mikhail�s death. When Samuel ShinRa used the fire materia, a small serpentine feline formed before him from a dark gray-green mist taking on the enemy he had attempted to use the materia on. Thus was the current incarnation of Dark Nation �born�. Once formed, she didn�t disperse once the danger was dealt with. Instead she stayed with Samuel as his near constant companion, learning even more through this than she already knew from snatches of memory gleaned from six generations the orbs of materia had caught and kept within them. When Samuel�s son Rufus Daniel ShinRa was born, Dark Nation turned her attention from Samuel to Rufus when the boy was given the heirloom materia and introduced to her on his third birthday. Serving him the same as she had served Samuel until he too had given her to his own son, Nicolas. She remained with him for many years even past the birth of Nicolas�s son, Arthur. Nicolas refrained from giving Arthur the materia though when Nation expressed her dislike for the small boy and simply refused to have anything to do with him. However when Arthur�s small son arrived, she expressed her satisfaction with the small blonde, prompting Nicolas to give Rufus the materia he had withheld from the boy�s father. Watching over the youth she grew further along in intelligence and a little in power. When they were moved from Junon to Midgar, she stayed close to Rufus only allowing those few of whom she approved of near her master, though there were times when she was forcibly separated from him. She provided Rufus with comfort during his teens and accompanied him when he was sent away from Midgar to Junon and then to an island off the coast of Mideel. When she returned to Midgar with Rufus, she defended him against a blonde man that smelled wrong to her physical senses and felt �off� to her other senses. Disapproving the closeness as well as the vaguely threatening manner that caused her hackles to rise. So she fought along side Rufus but was defeated and forced to retreat back into an insubstantial form in order to recover. Unfortunately around the time she managed to recover completely was when HOLY and METEOR met over Midgar. Due to the Materia still being on Rufus, she was forced to remain in and around Midgar and followed Sierra�s men at a distance when they removed the young man from the ruins to their base. |
