Title: Five Flutes

Summary: In Ruby/Sapphire, there are five flutes – red, blue, yellow, black, and white, each having a specific function. So what if there were guardians of each?

Chapter 1/Prologue

No one had expected it to happen, but it had. Even Celebi cannot predict the future accurately every time.

However, once some enterprising glass manufacturer using volcanic ashes had created the five flutes, there had created a void.

Instead of the poke flute, there were now new items to cure battle settings. That meant possible disorder.

The red flute broke attraction. The blue flute woke victims from sleep. The yellow flute snapped pokemon out of confusion. The black flute drove wild pokemon away, while the white flute attracted them.

So in essence, a trainer with all five flutes was quite prepared for a range of problems in the wild.

            That could not continue.

Fortunately, having the flutes also had it’s own catch. One had to be a halfway competent musician to actually _play_ them.

            Still…

< Any ideas? > Lugia woke up as Serebii actually started asking the other legendary pokemon for opinions.

< Create new guardians? > Suicune stretched and yawned.

Moltres burst into flames. < No way! That would mean giving humans pokemon powers! That can’t be! >

They had tried an experiment before – once. The resulting girl had turned out a bit _too_ well. She had evolved into a Magmar barely a year into her duties. Thus, none of the legendary pokemon was inclined to try again (and possibly fail).

No, make it twice. Then, Latios and Latias had decided to experiment. What had resulted was kindly referred to as a mess, since the genetic code had been so unstable that said guardian had melted into goo.

Moltres took it the worst, since she had been the one to design the first guardian. Still, at least it hadn’t _died_!

Latios and Latias still looked sick. They were against the idea steadfastly.

< Well, let’s hope that in three years we’ve learned a bit more about humans. > That came from Raikou.

< I disagree. > Regirock growled. < After all, Houen is _my_ home, not yours. >

A fight started as Regice whapped Regirock with an icy hand? Paw? Registeel got annoyed and hit both of them to make them shut up.

The Regis clan was not known for high intelligence.

Rayquaza coughed. Mew helpfully handed him a cough drop.

< Do you have anything to say? >

< I say that instead of creating guardians, we find five that are naturally inclined towards the flutes and then grant them powers. >

< Might work. > Mewtwo said thoughtfully. < But what if the rebel? >

< Oh for goodness’s sakes, we won’t give them superpowers… just slightly higher skills than normal trainers. That way it’s safe. >

< Good idea Kyogre. > Entei nodded.

            < Thank you. >

< Nothing to lose. > Honou yawned.

< Then let’s get started and search! >

Splitting up, each core of legendaries returned to their home region and began searching.

Deoxys was the first. All right, so scanning from space might count as cheating, but she found twins who had both the White and Black flute. Koga and Aya.

Lugia found the third. Of course, he had a hard time of it as the woman carrying the baby was trying to abort the child, but he had hypnotized her until she had given birth and then taken the child as his own. It helped that he had transferred $20,000 to her bank account to ease the transition. His child grew up to hold the Blue Flute.

Entei found the fourth, when Whitney grew up she would hold the Red Flute. It made sense, as she trained pokemon who all knew the move Attract.

The fifth, that would hold the yellow flute, had not been born yet.

            Time ticked by slowly.

Koga and Aya were only six when they were called. Latios and Latias took them in. their father had died in a duel, anyways, and their mother wouldn’t care much either way. She was already busy dating another man.

            It didn’t matter then.

They left Kanto and journeyed to Houen via a quick Fly. Afterwards, the two psychic pokemon trained them in the way of stealth.

            It worked admirably.

Koga and Aya were currently playing a duet. The black and white flutes cancelled each other’s effects out, so no wild pokemon were coming or going. It just sounded like nice music.

< Sounds nice. > Latios said.

            “Thank you, Father.”

Aya nodded as she put her flute down, having completed the last few measures of the tune. “We’re glad you adopted us.”

            Latios grinned. < I as well… >

Lance slept as Lugia nodded. _His_ child. That lazy, stupid woman had to pay for her crime. Later.

In his sleep, the boy looked peaceful enough. Still, no normal child clutched a Blue flute to him like a lifeline.

            Perhaps it was one.

Whitney hugged Entei as he gave her a ride around the ranch. The miltank mooed and swished their tails around passively.

They did not regard Entei as a threat. After all, he had been here often to take care of Whitney. He had also brought her the Red Flute.

It made sense… he must be here to protect her.

            Right?

Right. Well, all right. Maybe Miltank were kind of stupid, but it could be a lot worse. They were loyal enough.

Miltank (Moomoo) milk sold for a good price too.

Brendan fought his way to consciousness as he woke up, yawning. Deoxys was already shaking him.

< Up and at em! Time to wake up! >

Brendan sighed. Yes, another day… he grabbed his Yellow Flute off the nightstand and followed her out the door.

            Time for another day…

Deoxys said that when they all grew up, they would have power. But he didn’t want power, did he?

            It sounded kind of nice.
