Ash frowned as he faced his opponent. It was Gary. Gary hadn’t recognized him, of course. His white hair was tucked behind his ears, while sunglasses shaded his blue-green eyes. Gary had come to challenge Blaine. He hadn’t needed the Volcano badge the first time he had competed in the league, but he wanted one for the prestige, since it was rumored that Blaine was very hard to beat.

Blaine was busy taking care of one of his Magmars, which was in labor. He had instructed Ash to take on any challengers, but within rules – he could only use fire pokemon.

“Well? Where is Blaine?” Gary asked arrogantly.

“Why do you care?” Ash asked. He twirled a stray strand of hair around a finger as he removed a ‘bead’ from his belt. The belt consisted of a flower clasp attached to sixteen strands of beads. The ‘beads’ were actually miniature poke balls, while the flower clasp was made out of nine glass globes containing the nine legendary birds.

            “I need the volcano badge!”

“Then you have to fight me.” Ash said. “I’m filling in for Blaine today.”

“Oh, I see. Well, in that case – go Arcanine!”

“Flareon, I choose you!” Ash said. He briefly wondered why Gary was using a fire pokemon against a gym leader who only used fire or fire-related pokemon, but brushed the thought aside.

“Arcanine, Extreemespeed!” Gary called, getting the first hit.

“Flareon, use Take Down!” Ash called. Flareon knocked Arcanine near the edge of the platform, but was hit with recoil. Arcanine growled and stood up. A blue light glowed around it.

“Arcanine, RAGE!” Gary said confidently. Arcanine growled and knocked Flareon into the lava. Gary cheered.

Ash shook his head. “It’s not over yet.” True enough, Flareon jumped out of the lava, looking perfectly fine.

“You see, lava actually heals certain fire pokemon.” Ash said. “Enough of this. Flareon, Demon Bite!”

Flareon rushed over as its canines elongated and sank its fangs into Arcanine’s neck. Arcanine howled in pain.

Gary recalled his Arcanine. “Very well. Then I’ll go for type advantage. Gyrados, Hydro Pump!”

“Protect!” Ash called across the arena. A shield of stars surrounded Flareon, protecting it momentarily from the blast of water. “Quick Attack!”

Flareon rammed Gyrados. However, a second Hydro Pump from the water dragon connected and Flareon was taken out.

“Fine. Go Typhlosion!” Ash called. Gary blinked as he stared at the strange porcupine-like fire pokemon that had just appeared.

            “What the heck, Gyrados, Surf!”

“Typhlosion, Sunny Day!” As the water neared the fire pokemon, a beam of sunlight shot across the battlefield, cutting off half of the water. The rest cascaded over the fire pokemon, who roared in pain.

“Thunder Punch!” Ash shouted. Typhlosion nodded as its fists glowed golden and Gyrados was electrocuted. However, Gary had prepared for this.

“Gyrados, Hyper Beam!” The much stronger normal attack knocked Typhlosion silly, rendering Thunder Punch ineffective for that length of time.

< Gyrados has to recharge now. Use Thunderpunch again! >

Typhlosion growled as it stood up. Electricity surrounded both fists as it knocked Gyrados out of the air and down into the lava. Fortunately, Gary recalled Gyrados in time. Unfortunately, Typhlosion fainted an instant later, having used all its energy to launch Thunderbolt.

* Gary’s getting better… I’ll have to try harder. * Ash thought. Out loud, he said nothing as he recalled Typhlosion and removed another ‘bead’ from his belt. The ‘bead’ enlarged to become a black-and-white streaked poke ball.

Gary summoned Rhydon, knowing that Rock pokemon were usually very good against fire types.

Ash smirked. “This’ll be easy. Go – Phoenix!” The electric/fire legendary bird appeared and cawed.

“Rhydon, Rock Slide!” Gary called, wondering why his opponent was using a flying type against a rock type.

“Phoenix, Fire Rain!” Ash called. Fire and water mixed together came down and rained all over the Rhydon, who screeched. Ash put his hands over his ears.

“Rhydon, Horn Drill!” Rhydon’s horn whirred as it charged the bird. However, it barely had time to move forward before a well-aimed Steel Wing attack knocked it out.

“I win.” Ash said. Gary scowled. He quickly left. Ash closed the doors of the gym and went to find Blaine.

“So, how are the babies?” Ash asked.

“Four magbies. Two male, two female.” Blaine said. “They’re all pretty healthy, too.”

“That’s good.” Ash said, sighing in relief. He watched as Blaine took care of the mother.

Gary left the stadium, fuming. Who was that guy? It hadn’t been Blaine in one of his disguises. The voice sounded much too young. However, he couldn’t shake the feeling that he knew this mysterious trainer.

Ash smiled as he brushed the fur of a purring Ninetails. It had been a week since his match with Gary – who hadn’t known it was he – but the feeling was still very satisfactory. He absent-mindedly fed the Ninetails a rare candy and continued brushing.

Are you bored? Ninetails asked.

No, just thinking. Ash replied. Blaine was off trying to resurrect a Kabuto. Just wondering if anything exciting will happen.

I see. Well, if you’re not busy, I’d like some braised beef with thin pepper slices. Ninetails said.

Ash laughed as he headed for the kitchen to prepare dinner for the pokemon.

That night, Ash didn’t sleep well. Nightmares filled his slumber.

NOOOOO! Ash tried desperately to move as a person threw a master ball at him. The area was littered with dead and dying pokemon. Moltres lay, dead, on his right, while Articuno had just been captured. Scattered feathers indicated the capture of the other legendary birds. Serebi was flying around, trying to help her younger siblings, but she was not a fighting pokemon. She liked peace, and could only heal.

Darkness filled his vision as the ball opened and sucked him in.

Ash woke up, panting and gasping for air. Just a dream…

Are you okay? Pikachu asked.

< It was just a nightmare. I’ll be fine. > Ash said. Pikachu flipped over and started to snore again. Ash left to go and get a drink of water.

Blaine was in the kitchen, fixing himself a midnight snack. “Hi, Ash. Couldn’t sleep?”

“Nightmares.” Ash muttered as he poured himself a glass of water. He took a few sips and grimaced. It was way too cold for his liking.

“Oh. I see.” Blaine said. “Well, if I can help in any way, please ask.”

“Thanks, Blaine.” Ash said. His fingers glowed red for a brief second as the water heated up. Blaine was too busy putting a burrito in the microwave to notice.

Ash finished his water and headed back to bed. However, he was interrupted on the way.

“Prepare for trouble!”

“And make it double!”

“To protect the world from devastation!”

“To unite all people within our nation!”

“To denounce the evils of truth and love!”

“To extend our reach to the stars above!”

“Jessie!”

“James!”

“Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!”

“Surrender now or prepare to fight!”

“Persian, that’s right!”

Ash’s eyes narrowed as he faced his former teammates. “What do you want?”

“Hand over the Magmar!” Jessie said. She pointed a fire hose at Ash threateningly. Ash winced as he imagined what would happen.

            “Pikachu, Jolteon, go!” Ash called.

“Arbok, Wheezing, go!” Jessie called.

The two pokemon surrounded Pikachu and Jolteon. Ash pulled out another poke ball. “Blizzardeon, go!” The female ice eevee evolution froze the hose.

“Arbok! Poison sting! Wheezing, Smog!”

“Jolteon, Pikachu, use match-thunder!” Ash called. Electric bolts surrounded the two pokemon, as little disks of electricity formed, hitting Jessie, James, and Persian, even though the pokemon couldn’t see anything.

“It looks like Team Rocket is blasting off again!” They called as they flew off.

Ash scoffed. “That was easy.”

Pikachu and Jolteon headed off to the healing center, followed by Blizzardeon.

            “That was easy.”

< Yep! > Jolteon said as he jumped in the rejuvenator.

< Well, go back to sleep. > Ash said.

“Who is that guy?” Gary asked Nurse Joy.

            “Who?”

            “Blaine’s assistant.”

“Oh, him?” Joy thought for a few moments. “They call him Ashura. He’s supposed to be a pretty good trainer.”

“He is!” Gary said. * I can’t believe he beat me! *

            “Do you know his weakness?”

Joy shook her head. “Sorry. But I do have a list of the pokemon he has.”

“You do? Can I see it?”

            “Sure.”

            Ashura’s pokemon

  1. Charizard
  2. Flareon
  3. Ninetails
  4. Typhlosion
  5. Phoenix
  6. Magby

Gary sighed. “They’re all fire pokemon.”

“I know.” Joy said, shaking her head. “But that’s all he’s ever used, when he fills in for Blaine.”

Gary scowled. “Oh well. Maybe Drake and Kelly will help me.”

Drake was actually Ash’s half-brother, same father but a different mother. He was two years older than Ash. Ash didn’t know this, because his mother had been a legendary pokemon but his father was a magical being. Kelly was a ditzy blonde (I’m not implying that blondes are all airheads, because I know some smart ones, but Kelly is ditzy for story purposes.)

“Drake?”

Drake picked up his phone. “Yes?”

“I need your help.”

“Who is this?”

“Gary.”

“Oh fine.” Drake said. “Where are you, and how much are you paying me?”

“Cinnabar Island. We’ll discuss the price later.”

Drake summoned his Kadabra and they teleported to Cinnabar.

“What is it?” Drake asked. He noticed that Kelly, one of Gary’s cousins, was there also.

“I want to get the volcano badge, but I can’t.” Gary said.

“Why does that have anything to do with us?” Kelly asked.

“I need you to battle this guy so I can figure out what his tactics are.”

“Fine. Is he cute?” Kelly asked.

“I guess… he’s got white hair.”

“Well, I’ll battle him.” Kelly said. Gary led the way to the Cinnabar island gym.

They saw Ash sitting on a chair and reading manga.

“You! Are you giving away the volcano badge?” Kelly asked.

“Yes, why?”

“I challenge you!” Kelly said.

Ash shrugged. “Suit yourself.” He pressed a button and the stadium floor unloaded.

Kelly grinned. “He is cute!”

Gary sweatdropped, while Drake took out his strategy notebook.

Kelly stepped up. “Kelly chooses… Seadra!”

Ash smirked. “Are you trying to go for type advantage?”

“Of course!” Kelly said matter-of-factly.

“Very well. I choose Charizard!”

Charizard materialized and roared loudly.

“Seadra, Bubblebeam!” Kelly said, as a stream of the bubbles knocked into Charizard.

“Flaming Thunder.” Ash said calmly while he crossed his arms. Charizard fired off the bolt of flaming electricity, frying the Seadra.

“Seadra, Recover!” Kelly said, having bred it onto the pokemon.

“Interesting. Charizard, Fire Spin.” Seadra was trapped inside a ring of fire, but the fire itself wasn’t doing that much damage.

“Come on Seadra, break out of it with Water Gun!”

Seadra fired a Water Gun through the rings of fire and escaped, before fogging up the room with smokescreen.

“Fissure.” Ash said, wanting to end the battle quickly. The attack plowed into the Seadra, knocking it out in one hit.

Drake looked up from his notebook. “He’s good.” He told Gary. “His pokemon know a lot of elemental attacks that can defeat their weaknesses.”

Gary frowned. “But if I used a fast pokemon to knock them out in one hit?”

“That might work…” Drake looked over to Kelly. “Use a fast pokemon!”

Kelly shrugged. “Okay. Go- Vaporeon!”

Charizard started off with Roar, freezing vaporeon in its tracks.

“Vaporeon, Hydro Pump!” Hydro Pump plowed into Charizard, making it roar in pain.

“Hydro Pump should have K.O.’d it … what level is it on?” Drake asked.

Gary looked towards the scoreboard. “It’s not listed.”

“Darn.” Drake scanned his notebook. “This could be difficult…”

“Charizard, Thunder!” Ash said, getting annoyed. Vaporeon was fried.

Kelly looked nervous. “Guys, I’m out of water pokemon…”

“Use a rock-type then. Or a ground-type.” Gary suggested.

“Yes. Try using rock.” Drake seconded.

“Okay. Golem-go!”

“Charizard, come back!” Ash said, recalling his Charizard. “Since you’re losing, why don’t’ you just quit now?”

Kelly shook her head as she got a determined look in her eye.

“Fine, fine. Ninetails, go!”

“Golem, Fissure!”

Ninetails fell over, severely wounded, but not dead or fainted.

“Hmm… okay. Use Hydro Flare!”

Ninetails obliged and shot out the fire/water attack.

“Golem, Harden!” Kelly said. Golem braced itself as the hot water boiled over its stone body.

“Tsk, tsk. That was cheap.” Ash said. “Oh well. Ninetails, finish it! Demon bite!” Ninetails’ fangs elongated and it chomped Golem. Hard.

Golem got swirly-eyed and fell over.

“Golem! Self-destruct!” The explosion knocked out both golem and ninetails.

Ash flinched. “Ninetails, return.” He said.

Drake had taken out his laptop and was now punching in keys at rapid speed.

“Any ideas yet?” Gary whispered.

“No! I’m trying to work here!”

Kelly rubbed her head. “Hmm… okay, go Charmeleon!”

Ash stared at her. “Oh well, your loss. Go Flareon!”

            Flareon materialized and quickly bristled.

“Flareon, take down.” Ash said. Flareon nodded and plowed into the unfortunate Charmeleon, dumping it into the lava below.

Ash smirked. “Sorry. You’ll have to try again some other time.” He gracefully leaped off the platform and vanished.

Drake stood up and called Gary over.

“Okay, I have a plan now… but you’re going to have to pay me…”

“Bring it on!” Gary said confidentially.

Kelly headed off to stalk ash.
