Personality: Katie is usually a pretty outgoing person who has a bit of a big
mouth and a tendency to say the wrong thing at the wrong time. She makes up for
this, though, with being as kindhearted as possible and making sure people know
she’d never be malicious on purpose. She does everything with passion, and that
includes falling in love. She can be fierce when protecting what she believes
in and her daughter, and doesn’t hesitate to answer violence with violence
especially if she’s defending someone or something.
Becoming a mother quieted down her wilder nature, and after being initiated,
Katie finally settled, becoming happy with who she was, and facing up to what
she had done in the past. She’s still mortified about how her child was
created, but would do it all over again, because she can’t imagine living
without Tsukiko.
Now that she’s back in Boston, she avoids anyone she believes might be a
wererat, but she values the friendship that has grown between her and Bella.
It’s a support to know another woman who has children by a shapeshifter.
In her work, more of the old Katie comes through, and she’s only cold and
professional when the situation demands it. Being possessed is not one of
Katie’s favourite things, but according to her grandmother it’s a gift and she
tries her best to value it.
Katie is pretty good at being a cop, and enjoys being in the RPIT squad,
finally using the talents she previously employed to stalk Brys, for better
things. She hopes fervently that Brys remembers as little as possible from
their night together, because then it will minimize the chance of him finding
out about Tsukiko. She’s deathly afraid that he’ll go to court and get custody
of their daughter.
Family: Tenchi Nakamura (father, alive), Jill Nakamura(mother, alive), Monday
Tsukiko Nakamura (daughter, alive)
History: Katie was born May 17th, 1984, in Tokyo. Her father, Tenchi Nakamura, was
successful in his work and money never was a problem. This was also why the
family moved to America when Katie became old enough to start school. Her
mother was American and wanted her daughter to get an American education. Her
father had no problems with the transfer as his phone-company was connected to
one in the states.
Katie did well in school, getting the good grades her father wanted her to get.
She got involved in skateboarding as a hobby, and even though she never got
exceptional at it, she was a decent skateboarder. When she became 16 her
maternal grandmother decided it was time to show her a bit of the family
inheritance. Her grandmother was a descendant of a long line of practisers of
voodoo, and intended to pass the knowledge on to Katie. Katie showed little to
no talent, but was encouraged to keep up her practicing in case she did develop
powers. After graduating, Katie shocked her father by not going off to the
local university. Instead she started working as a secretary in his company
when it became clear that she was sick of studying.
Then, around January 2007, Katie finally found out that it was time to truly
rebel. She wanted to stand on her own two feet and be independent. Packing her
bags, she left the family house and moved to Boston. However, her father was
worried about her and only let her stay when she allowed him to pay for her
apartment.
In Boston, Katie located Brys Hanrahan. She had obsessed about him and even
started skateboarding ever since finding out about him. Her disappointment was
great when she found that he had a girlfriend already, and she was slightly
shocked to find that he wasn’t fully human. However, Katie didn’t let this stop
her. Using an old ritual, she made a potion and lured it into Brys’ drink one
evening. She did not think it would work, for up until then she had showed no
huge talent for this brand of magic. But the potion worked, and the night she
spent with Brys still stands out as the most wonderful and terrifying night of
her life. Even in his drugged condition, he held back his beast, but he was far
rougher than expected, and Katie was bruised and sore for a long time after.
That night served as a reality check for Katie. Finally she saw that what she
had been doing was wrong, very wrong, and she felt such an amount of shame that
she couldn’t face being in Boston anymore. She fled back home and moved in with
her grandmother. It soon became apparent that she was pregnant, and she decided
to keep the child. Craving order in her life, Katie now submerged herself into
studying to become a cop and studying Vodou.
After two years, she was allowed to be initiated, showing an aptitude for it
all that hadn’t been there only a few years back. By then she had given birth
to a daughter, who she named Monday Tsukiko, as she was born on a Monday, on
the night of a full moon. During the initiation ceremony, Katie was possessed
for the first time in her life. It was a wonderful experience, but she was
dreadfully weary afterwards and couldn’t remember anything. She was told that
Erzulie Freda had chosen her for possession and Katie felt honoured indeed.
Just a few months later, on Tsukiko’s birthday, Katie’s grandmother died. Katie
grieved, but also started feeling a tugging in her. She knew she ought to
return to Boston. She had done a great wrong there that she needed to make
right. So she transferred to Boston, and became an intern in the RPIT
department in that area.
Back in Boston, she soon became acquainted and then friends with the woman who
ran the local magic shop, Bella. In 2011, she was made a detective, and not
long after helped in solving a big case. Getting such a boost up, Katie chose
to return to RPIT, but as a detective this time.
She still hasn’t worked up to sending Brys a note with an apology, and has
started to believe she never will. Instead, she focuses on giving Tsukiko all
she can, and try to make the world a better place for her daughter.
Strengths: Her fierceness, cunning, and sense of responsibility, her magic.
Weaknesses: she’s extremely attached to her daughter, and would be a complete
mess if she lost her. She avoids anyone who even look remotely rat-like, and
will drive around the city to avoid Brys. She still often say the wrong thing
and this can lead to unforeseen trouble.
