| Personality: Doug is a fairly complicated guy. On one hand he’s pretty family-oriented and is very close with his older sister, who is the only one he’ll really let his guard down with. He enjoys his work and takes pride in the careful, old-fashioned handiwork he does. On the other hand he’s a somewhat masochistic trouble-maker with a genuine love for pain and violence. To a certain extent he prefers being on the receiving end of it rather than the delivering one though. He’ll pick fights just for the hell of it and has been arrested a couple of times, but always released on bail (which his sister always gets to pay for). He’ll pick fights with pretty much anyone except his own leaders. But he very rarely goes for the submissives as they don’t put up enough of a fight for his taste. Despite his slightly masochistic nature, he doesn’t have a death-wish and would never challenge one of his leaders. He doesn’t generally dislike people, he simply likes to fight with them.
Family: Marie McCabe (mother, dead), Aaron McCabe (father, alive), Dean McCabe (older brother, alive), Eleanor ‘Ellie’ McCabe (older sister, alive), Eloise Stein (younger sister, alive) and Cillian/James Dennis (nephew, alive)
History: Doug was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1982 as the third child out of four to a Protestant family. His older brother, Dean, was 11 years older than Doug and his younger sister five years younger. As such, Doug was always closest with his older sister, Ellie, who was four years his senior. Doug grew up in a troublesome time in Belfast. When he was five, his family immigrated to America. They deliberately settled in an area not known for its Irish community, most of the original Irish immigrants had been Catholic and Aaron feared similar violence to that in Belfast. Aaron and Dean quickly found work in construction and Marie worked part time in a shop. It was not ideal but it paid.
Doug took to the move pretty well. He settled into a school where he learned that if someone beat you up, it was for your own good and you should just suck it up and learn to defend yourself. This was no problem for Doug, who soon learned to stand up for himself. The only problem was, he came to quite enjoy fighting and would soon be the one who picked the fights rather than the one who got picked on. He got into trouble quite a lot and his grades were never great, but he’d come to realize that as one of the middle children he could get away with a lot. In a way that made him almost try to get into trouble, just to see if anyone would care.
Doug was 13 when his older sister, Ellie, became pregnant. As opposed to the rest of the family, Doug thought she should’ve kept the kid. But he tried to be supportive for her.
Despite his somewhat appalling grades, Doug managed to graduate High School. Always having had an interest in working with wood, he managed to talk himself into an apprenticeship at a carpenter’s shop. The man worked in fairly old-fashioned ways and Doug soon developed a love for the trade. He respected his mentor and the old ways of working. He was around 18 when his sister, Ellie, told him about her magical talents. He was surprised and more than a little shocked, but in the end he found it pretty cool.
Doug’s mother died when he was 20 and about the same time his sister left New York to travel around the world. Doug worked for his mentor until he was 25. His sister Ellie had returned to the U.S. and was living in Boston. Having always been close to her, Doug decided to move the Boston to be closer to her. At this point he’d saved up some money and managed to get a big enough loan from the bank to buy himself a small house with a decently sized garage. He’d soon turned the garage into his own workshop and set up deals with some local stores to sell his stuff. He also arranged for a website for his small one-man company and does a decent profit through that.
When he was 28, Doug went clubbing with some old friends in New York. He met a girl and hooked up with her. They went back to his motel room, but she turned out to be a wererat and couldn’t control herself. She shifted during sex and nearly killed Doug. It was only luck that saved him from dying. The girl had fled and Doug managed to call 911 before losing consciousness. He woke up a day later in the hospital. He was alive, but he realized he’d most likely been infected with lycanthropy. To the doctors he said a one-night stand had attacked him with a knife. Although he’d nearly died, the experience had somehow thrilled Doug. Pain and violence seemed to act as a strange kind of turn-on for him. Once home in Boston, he told his sister what had happened. She used some of her connections to find a witch who could check what strain of lycanthropy he might have. He soon found out he was a wererat and managed to get in contact with the local Brenin, getting introduced to the local Clan.
He settled into shifter life fairly easily, enjoying his new strength and ability to heal. He often found himself getting into trouble for stepping out of line with other shifters and it was more a habit than an exception that he’d find himself getting the shit beat out of him. The violence became like a drug and to this day, he sees fighting as a hobby and will often provoke people into fights. He never really liked picking on the submissives. They were no challenge to him and he’d rather go for those his own strength or above. The ones he knew would put up a good fight.
Strengths: street-fighting, high tolerance for pain, he’s great at working with wood and can make a masterpiece out of a simple log.
Weaknesses: he can be arrogant and annoying, he can get very blinded by his love for violence and sometimes ends up picking fights with people he really shouldn’t, he has a bit of a big mouth which can get him into trouble as much as his fists can, he has a serious weakness for his sister and there is little he will deny her.
Home: a small, two-story house in Weymouth. The house has two bedrooms, one larger bathroom up stairs and a smaller one downstairs, a fairly small living room, a kitchen, a small backyard and a garage, which has been turned into a workshop for Doug’s carpentry. The whole house is sparsely decorated and anything he has on the walls is Ellie’s doing.
Other: he has a dog called Sam that is a mix between a German shepherd and a golden retriever.
