Chapter 4-
She had stepped out of
the house before the sun had even finished setting, being extra careful to stay
in the shadows. The piece of paper that was covered with a fake distress note
from Giles, stating that the Slayer was in need of a book and that her adopted
sister, Dawn, was to retrieve it, ending in a signature, was tucked in the back
pocket of her mini skirt. They all hoped that it was enough to at least get
into the headquarters without being found out as a vamp, getting out would be
much easier.
Dawn approached the
doors, giving a heavy clang of the door knocker. She waited, hearing the
shuffling of feet behind the door. She knocked frantically at the door to play
up the emergency behind the note in her pocket.
Finally the door
opened, and Dawn flung herself against the women that had opened it. “Oh, thank
god!” The women looked at her in surprise. “There’s no time to waste! Giles
sent me here for a book, here’s the note!” She shoved the piece of paper at the
woman.
“So you’re the Slayer’s
adopted sister?” Dawn nodded frantically.
“I need to take this
book back to Sunnydale in
“Well Giles isn’t part
of the Council anymore, but I guess since it does involve the Slayer, even if
it’s one who chooses not to follow the Council rules, you may use the book. But
we need it returned as soon as possible. We like to keep our collection
complete around here.” The woman turned to retreat to the library, but noticed
that Dawn wasn’t following her. “Oh sorry, c’mon in, dear, follow me to the
library. I’ll have a cup of tea sent for you so you can calm down and tell me
all that’s happened. We might even find another book that can help you.”
“Don’t mind if I do,”
Dawn said under her breath as she entered.
A woman’s head poked
out of an entry way to the next room, “Who is it, Mary?” the woman asked.
“It’s the Slayer’s
sister.”
“The Slayer’s sister!”
“She’s being taken care
of. Ah, could you be a dear and have some tea made and sent to the library,
please.” The woman nodded and went off to complete the task.
A few moments later,
Dawn was sitting in a chair across form Mary; book in her lap, with a cup of
untouched tea in her hand. “So what are you up against?”
Dawn just stared at
her, trying to formulate some story in her mind. “Um, you know,
the usual stuff.”
“Like what?”
“Well, we live on a
hellmouth, so everything’s the usual. There really isn’t anything we haven’t
seen.” Dawn looked up at the clock on the wall ahead of her. She had been there
over a half hour. Angelus was going to be angry at her for taking so long, but
what else was new. Angelus was always getting at Spike and her for something.
“So the Slayer’s family
adopted you? And let you become apart of the Slayer’s life?”
“Well, not at first.
They adopted me at 14 so I had to fight to be apart of the demon world.” She
gave the women a little back ground, hoping to speed things up.
“Huh.”
Yeah. Look, they really
need me back with this and I have to go to make my flight back.”
“Oh, yes, sorry.” They
stood up and Mary led her back to the door.
“And I’ll make sure
that they get this book back to you as soon as possible,” Dawn said as she made
her way out the door.
“Thank you. Oh, and
tell Giles I said hi.”
“Don’t worry I will.”
The door closed behind her with a thump, “Not.” She shivered in disgust at
herself, “Kindness without sinister outcomes, bad. I can’t believe I did that.
Anyway, now to get back to daddy dearest.” She walked back to the flat with a
smile plastered on her face.
“Thank you. Oh and
