Shadow Avenger In The Media:
Shadow Avenger first appeared in the last three issues of the pulp magazine, Shadow Realms
in 1936. Despite the magazine being cancelled, the character proved to be such a popular character
that he was brought back later that year in his own magazine, Shadow Avenger. When Paragon
Comics began looking for pulp heroes to convert into comic characters, they looked towards Shadow
Avenger. In 1939, Shadow Avenger #1 hit the newstands and was an immediate success.
Several scripts were written for a Shadow Avenger radio serial but the show itself never materialized. A 15-episode movie serial entitled The Shadow Avenger was released in 1940 featuring Ron Reeve. It was based more on the pulp magazines than the comic books and was a hit more with older fans than younger fans.
Shadow Avenger pulp adventures stopped at the start of World War II but his comic adventures grew a larger audience. He was briefly mentioned on the popular Adventures of Captain Phantom radio show. Shadow Avenger himself never appeared on the show due to legalaties of who owned the radio rights to the character at that time.
After World War II, Paragon Comics folded like so many other comic companies did. For six years, Shadow Avenger was in limbo until a short lived series was produced by Olympian Comics in 1951 until 1957. However, a new legion of fans were being born who would decide to bring back the hero.
In 1981, a new comic company called Moongem Comics bought the rights to Shadow Avenger and produced a series of backup stories featured in their mainstream comic anthology, World's Bravest. Moongem Comics followed suit with a 4-part mini-series in 1981 then followed up with an ongoing series in 1984. Shadow Avenger is still being published today by Moongem Comics. Shadow Avenger adventures from Paragon Comics was reproduced and collected in Shadow Avenger Archives by Moongem Comics in 1999.
1993 saw the height of Shadow Avenger's popularity, a movie starring Richard Worth was released. The movie was an instant hit with comic fans and a live-action television series was produced later that year. Each Shadow Avenger episode was one hour long and starred Chris Ely (known for his role as Johnny Moore on Shadows In The Storm daytime drama in the late 1980s). The show produced a line of action figures based on both the comic character and the television series. The Shadow Avenger television series is currently available on video cassette.
Future media plans for Shadow Avenger include an animated series.
