The Norse World
Back to Norse Mythology

The Norse people had a very clear picture of what the world looked like. In fact they saw it a nine different worlds.
Alfheim: home of the light elves.
Vanaheim: home of the fertility gods.
Asgard: the home of the warrior gods called the aesir connected by a rainbow bridge called
Bifrost to:
Midgard: home of the humans.
Nidavellir: land of the dwarfs.
Jotunheim: land of the giants.
Svartalfheim: home of the dark elves
Niflheim: includes Hel, the realm of the dead
Muspell: a place of fire and home of the fire giants.

The Tree of life
The nine worlds were held together by the roots of the mighty Yggdrasil, a tree growing up into the stars. Ratatosk, a squirrel, ran up and down the branches trunk and roots of  Yggdrasil, delivering insults between the birds and the dragon, Nidhogg. The dragon chewed at the roots, trying to destroy the tree.
