Boss Guide
Many of the instructions here will mean very little if you have not seen the bosses and their rooms. Attempt each one before coming here.
Tail Cave halfway boss
When you enter the room it will roll a large roller at you. Jump over this with the feather and hit the creature with your sword. Try to stay between it and the roller, and knock it away from the roller, so it cannot attack you again. When you meet it again in Turtle Rock, arrows are very effective, because you can attack it across the roller.
Tail Cave Nightmare
Run towards it immediately, slashing rapidly. Aim for the tail, and stand in the middle of the platform. Try not to hit the head, as you will be thrown backwards. If you fall down a hole, you have to start that boss again.
Moblin boss
Move to the left or right of it, about halfway between it and the wall. Stand facing it with your shield up. When you hear it revving up, quickly run straight up or down. It will charge into the wall and stun itself. This is the only time you can hurt it. Hit it repeatedly with your sword until it recovers.
Bottle Grotto halfway boss
Run towards it, hit it with your sword, then run away again. It will throw a bomb. Wait until the bomb has exploded, and attack again. If you have the bow, exploding arrows kill it very quickly, and you can stay far enough away from it to avoid its bombs.
Bottle Grotto Nightmare
Run back and forth along the bottom of the screen, dodging its fireballs. When it starts to go inside the bottle, walk towards the bottle and slash rapidly with your sword. The bottle will try to attack you, but the sword will stop it from moving. Pick it up with the power bracelet, throw it against the back wall, then run back down to the bottom of the screen. When you have done this three times, the bottle will break. If you have the bow, stand facing it at the bottom of the screen and fire exploding arrows at it whenever it looks solid. If you do not, use your sword, but it is difficult. The Whirling Blade technique is very useful. If you want to use an Action Replay or Gameshark, the fire wand is the most effective weapon.
Key Cavern halfway boss
Place bombs in front of them. They will eat the bombs and hurt themselves. When you meet them in Turtle Rock, throw bombs from the raised area to get the key.
Key Cavern Nightmare
Charge the wall with the Pegasus boots. The boss will fall down from the ceiling. I have heard rumours that placing a bomb on its shadow before it hits the ground has spectacular results, but I have never managed to do it. Hit it with your sword a few times, then charge it with the Pegasus boots until it splits. Hit the halves with your sword. They will jump into the air and try to land on you. It can be helpful to hit them both at the same time. They land in the same place as each other, so you can hit them both again. Alternatively, concentrate on one at a time.
Angler's Tunnel halfway boss
There are several ways to defeat this boss. You can chase it round and round with the Pegasus Boots, and charge at it from behind. You can also jump over it with the feather. In Turtle Rock, the holes in the floor stop the Pegasus boot method from working, but you will probably have enough health to just wait in a corner and let it go past. (You get hit about two times in three.)
Angler's Tunnel Nightmare
Hit its head with your sword. Try to stay quite low down, and use the feather to dodge its charges.
Catfish's Maw : Master Skull
Hit it with your sword until it sinks to the ground, then place a bomb on it. You need to find and defeat it four times, and it will give you the hook shot.
Catfish's Maw halfway boss
Wait until a spider opens its eye, then hit it in the eye with an arrow, the hook shot or the boomerang.
Catfish's Maw Nightmare
Pull its head out by firing the hook shot into its open mouth, then hit its heart with your sword. Sometimes the head will come right out and explode, but this does not hurt it. If you stand against one of the side walls, the tail cannot reach you.
South Face Shrine boss
Fire arrows at it as rapidly as you can. (Note : you can't hurt it until it starts moving.)
North Face Shrine halfway boss
You can only hurt it with its own ball. Pick up the ball with the power bracelet and throw it.
North Face Shrine Nightmare
Run into the room with the power bracelet ready and smash all the pots. Then stand in a corner and slash rapidly with your sword to fend off the flying tiles. When they are all gone, go to the centre of the room and stand on the face. Holes will open and close in the floor. They do much more damage than normal holes, but the boss will never open holes on its face. Place bombs on the face.
Eagle Tower halfway boss
Run to the top-right corner of the room, and stand facing downwards. A group of bats will attack you. Slash rapidly with your sword. Kill them all in the first wave or they will all come back.
Eagle Tower Nightmare
Hit the eagle with your sword when it comes within your reach. Sometimes it will try to blow you off the platform, and if it succeeds you have to start again. Raise your shield and hold down the button that would move you towards it. It can help to be standing in the centre of the platform. When it appears, promptly move towards it so it has further to blow you. There is also a much easier way to defeat it. Once you have the mirror shield and have destroyed all four pillars, leave the dungeon and complete Turtle Rock first. The fire wand is the ultimate weapon to use on the eagle. Do not leave Eagle Tower if you are still working on knocking down the pillars, because the ones you have destroyed will come back, and the ball will return to its starting point. You almost need the mirror shield to reach Turtle Rock. It is possible to leave out Eagle Tower for a while and go straight to Turtle Rock, because the rooster can carry you past the flamethrower. It doesn't always work, though. Sometimes you die before getting past.
Turtle Rock
Many bosses return from earlier dungeons. This may sound like very bad news, but remember that you have more hearts and better weapons. See the notes on their earlier appearances for any differences.
Turtle Rock halfway boss
Spin it with your sword. It will charge at you sometimes. Be careful not to let it hit you, because it can send you back to the entrance of the dungeon.
Turtle Rock Nightmare
Stand at the bottom of the screen facing upwards. Shoot it rapidly with the fire wand.
Color Dungeon bosses
The Color Dungeon has no halfway boss, but it has two minor bosses. Sprinkle magic powder on the blue blobby one. The rocky one can be killed with the sword.
Color Dungeon Nightmare
Hit it rapidly with your sword. It starts blue and hitting it makes it more red. It throws you backwards when you hit it and tries to change back to blue. If you have the L-2 sword, sword beams are very effective. Arrows are also good. If you have neither of these, the Pegasus boots are useful.
Wind Fish's Egg Nightmare
The first form is like the blue blobby thing in the Color Dungeon. Sprinkle magic powder on it.
Stand facing the second form. It will charge up and shoot something at you. If it is round, use your sword to knock it back at the monster. The shovel also works. If it is cross-shaped, dodge quickly out of the way.
The third form is a bit like the Tail Cave Nightmare. Use your sword on its tail. It is easier to keep up with it if you follow the middle of its body and spin with your sword.
Charge the fourth form with the Pegasus boots. This is where the trouble comes if you still have the L-1 sword.
Face the fifth form with your shield up. It will push you into a corner. Without moving, plant a bomb. The fire wand also works.
The final form is the only really dangerous one. There are two ways to defeat it. When it opens its eye, shoot in either arrows or the boomerang. You can jump over its clubs with the feather. The boomerang will only hurt it if the eye is wide open and the clubs are pointing backwards, but it kills it with one hit. The arrows are easier to get in at first, but it takes a very large number to kill it, and it gets nastier the nearer it is to death. It moves faster and swings its clubs to the sides as well as the front and back.
