Well it's not as easy as one might think, but then on the other
hand it's also far easier than one might contemplate. Remember
when you were a kid you use to play Cowboys and Indians, well
roleplaying is on that level except you don't normally run around
to simulate if you captured or shot someone, you let dice decide.
But before I get too carried away, what you need to have to
roleplay is :
- A bunch of friends just as curious (around 4-6 is a good number)
| Okay a bunch of friends, well that shouldn't be to hard a thing
to find, well it might be. But all you have to do is propose the
game to a bunch of people you know and see who wants to play. |
- A system to use. Examples :AD&D; Cyberpunk
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons
If you want to be running around wielding a sword or casting
spells and basically do the big good vs evil stuff, then a great
choice (and one that many roleplayers know) is Advanceded Dungeons
and Dragons, otherwise known as AD&D.
To play AD&D you need to get 2 books :
- AD&D Players Handbook
- AD&D Dungeon Masters Book
There are a multitude of supplements for the game, though you only
need those two books to get started. The Dungeon Master (DM) is the
person who creates the adventure, everyone else in the game is
classified as a player character (PC). The players then get to
run there fantasy characters (by fantasy I mean you aren't restricted
to being a human, you can be an elf, dwarf, halfling or even a
half elf) though a mydrid of adventures ranging from dungeon romps
to high sea adventures. It's limited only by your imagination.
Cyberpunk
If you're not into the fantasy scene and are looking for something
thats hi tech and fast moving. Then you should check out Cyberpunk.
To play Cyberpunk you only need 1 book :
- Cyberpunk 2020
All information in the book is sufficent for both PC's and the DM,
Cyberpunk, is a setting of contradictions, high glitzy places with
the dregs of humanity outside of the same buildings. Where human
life is cheap, far cheaper than you would like. Paranoia is a normal
mind frame and this just a small part of the Cyberpunk lifestyle.
There are also lots of supplements, the most useful being the
chrome books, these are basically books on equipment. Which when
you are in the middle of a run, the more prepared you are the higher
the chances of you're survival.

- Dice
DiceDice, well to the uninitiated dice come in many shapes and
variety's. No longer are dice just 6 sided, they come in all manner
of shapes and sizes. And here's a list :
(Before I forget Dice is represented by a D, with a number after it
signifying what type of Die it is.)
D3 - A 6 sided dice
D4 - A 4 sided dice
D6 - A 6 sided dice
D8 - An 8 sided dice
D10 - A 10 sided dice
D12 - A 12 sided dice
D20 - A 20 sided dice
Each dice has a different shape ('cept D3 and D6, they look the same
but the D3 only goes up to 3) and they can be bought any where that
you can get role playing gear.
Oh yeah, if you ever see something that says D100, role 2D10 (two
ten sided dice) use one as the tens and the other as the one's. Perfect
for getting percentile numbers. |
- Someone to be the DM or GM or the person in charge
DM
The DM, well normally the DM is the person who buys all of the
role playing gear. Though don't be restricted to the one DM,
running games are a lot of effort and take a bit of time to
organise. After your group has gotten used to actually role playing
swap DM's. This way you aren't restricted to just one person's
version of DM'ing. In my role playing gang, everyone has DM'd a
game.
So everyone in my group knows and understands what a time consuming
and stressful job DM'ing is. But don't be put off by anything I've
said, after all you never know, you might be a natural. So go off
and buy some roleplaying gear, who knows you might suprise yourself. |
